Mount Hikurangi + The Victoria cross

In our reading we have been reading about Second Lieutenat Moananui-a-Kiwa Ngarimu VC. He was awarded the VC in ww2 for bravery and valour

The Victoria Cross is the highest military decoration awarded for ‘valour in the face of the enemy’ to members of the commonwealth.

In the reading the Germans fired machine guns were fired from the top of the 1,752m (5,748ft) tall mountain. Hikurangi is what Ngati Porou soldiers called this big hill. Mount Hikurangi is in the eastern corner of the north island of NZ

(It’s in Turanga-nui-a-kiwa)
